Weekend Open House: Preston Hollow Estate

You need to see the master bathroom of this lavish home we currently have under contract.  One of my favorite parts about showing this home, was to see peoples excited reaction when they saw the incredible 2500 gallon fish tank.  The previous owner had it installed with the intention of "feeling like she was in the sea when taking a bath."  Enjoy...

Foodie Friday: Rise No 1

If you haven't had lunch at Rise yet, give it a try.  The menu consists of delicious soups and soufflés both sweet and savory!  The atmosphere is like no other place in Dallas - it is so cozy and unique.  Even on a hot day like today I still craved a bowl of their delicious soup.  The owner, Hedda, is such a delight as well.  I had a girls lunch there today and we really enjoyed ourselves.
1. Strawberry Soufflé - Delish and they say only 122 calories 2. leave with a "thought of the day" - this was mine
3. Fresh french bed straight out of the oven is delivered to the table upon arrival 4.  The "Marshmallow" soup is one of my favorites ever - it is a tomato and carrot soup topped with souffléd goat cheese "marshmallows"

Dallas Museum of Nature and Science special visitor

If you are counting down the days to Shark Week's 25th anniversary on the Discovery Channel  starting on Sunday, August 12, and are thrilled at the fact that the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science is currently hosting the Planet Shark exhibit, then you are going to like what you are about to hear.

This Friday, July 27th, from 5pm to 7pm, Rodney Fox, a shark attack survivor (and in my opinion a super hero) will meet and greet members of the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science in Fair Park.  On Saturday, July 28th, Rodney will be at the museum to meet non members and tell his story about how he survived one of the worst, non-fatal, Great White Shark attacks in history.  Since his attack, he has devoted his life to shark expeditions, and on Saturday, everyone can have the opportunity to hear his story.  (He will be there from 10:00 - 10:30am, 12:30-1:00pm, 2:00-2:30pm, and 4:00-4:30pm.)

If you go meet Rodney plan on sticking around to see the Planet Shark: Predator or Prey exhibit, which will be fun for all ages.

Interesting Facts about Rodney Fox...
  • Rodney was brutally attacked by a Great White shark during a spearfishing competition in South Australia in 1963.  Rodney fought to escape the great white, and the shark was distracted by a tasty looking fish float.  Unfortunately, this float was attached to Rodneys waist and he was pulled far under the surface of the water.  Fortunately, the rope broke and Rodney was able to make it back up for air.
  • It took over 360 stitches to heal Rodney's wound across his arm and chest.
  • He still has a piece of the great whites tooth embedded in his right wrist.
  • Rodney has been involved in more than 100 different documentaries and movies including Steven Spielberg's 1975 film “Jaws”.
  • Rodney pioneered shark cages, used in shark cage diving, and organized the first expedition to hunt and film the Great White shark.
  • Despite his attack, Rodney says "sharks are not all that bad, we have very few confrontations with them, and we should look after all our fishes especially the Great White. We must learn to live with and understand all sharks including the Great White Sharks and not kill them simply out of fear."
  • It is estimated that Rodney has been involved in some way with 90 percent of all prominent White Shark images taken worldwide, in the 20th Century.
  •  In January 2007, Rodney was inducted into the International Scuba Divers Hall of Fame.

Kimberly's K9 Fitness Center and Spa

It is safe to say that Troy and I are pretty obsessed with our Dog, Jack.  We feel a little better about leaving him behind as we go on our summer travels because of Kimberly's K9 Fitness Center and Spa. Jack gets so excited when we drop him off, he does not even look back to say goodbye.  He is well taken care of there, and he loves to play with other dogs, especially the big ones.  He has been going there since he was a puppy either just for a day of play when I knew I was going to have a long day at work, or for days at a time when I have gone out of town.

"Even though part of me gets sad when my mom and dad pull out the suitcases to leave town, I know this usually means I get to spend some time at Kimberly's.  I love running on the treadmill, causing a ruckus in the yard, and socializing with the big dogs."
- Jack Schlegel Kloewer, Min Pin

"I recently had my first experience at Kimberly's.  I was a little nervous going because I don't generally love hanging out with other dogs.  It was cool though - I got to spend a lot of time with the nice ladies who work there, and they pretty much kept me away from the dogs who annoy me.  I also enjoyed a nice massage, and a luxurious bath."
-Buddy Schlegel, Yorkie Poo

"Spending time at Kimberly's makes my day.  I play so much that I am exhausted by the time I come home.  Last time I spent a few days there I needed a vacation from my vacation and slept for a whole day straight."
-Bailey Bowen, Yorkie

Kimberly's is conveniently located at 4555 Lovers Lane - Dallas, TX 75209

Maintenance Monday: Brow Wax

I love this montage from Princeton Calling of these famous beautiful brows!  If I could choose I think I'd like mine to look like a combination between Elizabeth Taylor's and Hedy Lamarr's.
Photo from Princeton Calling

Amy Romero (Previously, Amy Talanca) has been waxing my brows for as long as I can remember.  She is a joy to spend time with and a complete perfectionist when it comes to making brows the perfect shape!

At my last appointment, I showered the goddess of eyebrows with some questions.  Take a look at our summed up conversation below.

Amy's philosophy... "The eyebrows are quite honestly one of the most important features of your face. They frame your eyes and can elongate or widen a face based on how they're shaped.  A clean brow that is proportionately shaped for your individual features can completely transform your face."

Before an important event, Amy recommends that you come see her...  "at least three weeks before the event for the regular waxing and shaping. Then about 3-4 days prior to the big day, stop by the spa and we'll touch up, tweak, and perfect until you are completely satisfied. This should help prevent any redness or irritation from popping up in any pictures, but still be close enough to your event for you to look fresh and polished. Also, I cannot stress this enough, seeing your aesthetician regularly will eliminate having to make any drastic changes right before an important event."

For normal maintenance..."I tell most clients to be sure not to go more than 3-4 weeks without popping by to see me. However, there are some situations where I might advise coming in every two weeks if we're in the middle of a major brow reconstruction.  Your aesthetician can work with you on a regular basis to make sure you are happy with your look and, if necessary, suggest minor changes that can be taken in baby steps."

Amy's favorite tips for beautiful brows...

*Less is more.
If you wax just a little, and the shape isn't perfect yet, you can always wax/shape some more. But, if you wax too much and you hate it, tough cookies! Less is usually more when it comes to altering such a prominent feature, so go slowly!

*Pictures are your best friend.
If you have a specific look in your head, bring some pictures with you to your appointment. If you want to look like your sister/ fave celeb/ neighbor's best friend's gerbil's personal trainer, I'm going to need something to go off of here. I'm not a mind reader, and seeing a picture of what your goal is can help me assess how realistic it is for your specific face and features.
If we find ourselves on the journey to bringing your brows back from the deep, dark, depths of over plucking, I highly recommend snapping a "before" pic of where we started. Again, just like growing out your bangs, it is easy to get discouraged and go back to hacking at your face yourself (put the tweezers down!), but seeing your own progress can make a world of difference. I'm always happy to snap a pic before you leave my room, so just ask!

*If you don't look good, I don't look good, so trust me when I say I'm just as invested here as you are! As soon as you step out of the spa doors, you are a walking model for me. You represent my hard work, years of expertise, and non-stop obsession with perfection. I have every reason in the world to steer you in the right direction - so trust me when I tell you something, darn it! A happy customer with kick-butt brows is going to show off her beautiful face to friends and (hopefully) recommend me to those closest to her. You win, I win. It's that simple. We're a team here!

*Never underestimate the importance of your brow's foundation - your skin. A perfect set of brows on unhappy skin is just a travesty. Talk to your aestheticism about your skin concerns and ask for recommendations. Any major change usually calls for a facial appointment (pregnancy, new medication, moving to a new climate, etc.) and a good aesthetician will be more than happy to help you navigate the road back to happy, glowing skin.

*Pretend I'm like the FBI - you never, ever, ever want to lie to me
. Pretending you aren't taking a medication, withholding info about a new prescription or skin product...those are some really quick ways to have your whole face just fall right off, my friend. (Okay, that's a bit dramatic, but I have your attention now, yes?) There are a number of medications out there that are bad news bears when it comes to waxing. Your skin could be too thin, delicate, and prone to lifting (aka come off with the hair!), and we want to avoid that whole mess. Tell me what you're using, and I promise we can figure out a way to work around it.

To make an appointment with Amy Call Halcyon Days Salon & Spa at Neiman Marcus North Park at 214-346-0731.

Weekend Open House: The Azure #2900

I thought it would be fun to share photos of this listing on the 29th floor of The Azure.  The owner purchased half of the floor during the buildings construction and finished out its nearly 4800 square feet per his specifications complete with three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, large living areas, formal and causal dining areas, and a media room.  We took these photos during dusk, which proves to be a pretty spectacular time of day to hang out in this home.

The living area is encased by floor to celling windows and has incredible views of Dallas.
This is the 3rd bedroom
The master bathroom offers great views of the sunset when getting ready for an evening out.  I love carrera marble!

The master bedroom has a fireplace, access to the balcony, a sitting room, and huge closet.

This second bedroom also has its own fireplace, an on suite bathroom, and access to the balcony.

The massive balcony offers true outdoor living space and has a fireplace.  The moon was so beautiful on the night the photos were taken!

The formal dinning area is open to the living room and attached to an outdoor dinning space.

Imagine the fun dinner parties and romantic dinners for two that have taken place on the private dinning balcony with beautiful views of the city.

I love how carrera marble and glass make up the walls in this bathroom.

The kitchen is finished with top of the line appliances including a built in espresso maker and full size wine fridge.  It also has a breakfast bar and an attached breakfast room.

The pool deck at the azure is incredible!
A long gallery hallway connects the living areas to the three bedrooms.
The media room has access to the balcony when wanting to enjoy a view and blackout shades for when its time to watch a movie.

Foodie Friday: Parigi

If you are looking for a chic place where ladies lunch or a fun place to have brunch with another couple in Dallas Parigi is where it is at! The atmosphere is like nowhere else in Dallas and the food is divine.

At brunch, I highly recommend the polenta blueberry pancakes.  They are insanely delicious.

Last weekend at lunch with a few friends Troy and I both ordered the quinoa (I still have yet to find a place in Dallas that makes better quinoa, if any).  He ordered off the menu and it arrived stuffed in a portobello mushroom.  I'm not a mushroom fan, so I asked for it with a side of the zucchini "spaghetti" which is mouthwatering with roasted garlic and tomatoes and drizzled with some amazing balsamic.

After choosing this over the pancakes, we felt that we could justify some indulgent dessert.  The oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream is some of the best I have ever tasted in my life!

I found this picture while browsing through my wedding photos.  I love parigi's food so much that we asked Chef Janice Provost to cater my bridesmaids luncheon.  Much to my delight, she work pink that day!

Happy Canada Day!

July 1st has always been a special day for me, because it is Canada's Independence Day, the country where I was born and where my whole family comes from.  Two years ago today, Canada Day became even more special for me, because my hubby, Troy, proposed during a walk on the beach.  Every year we like to escape the Dallas heat for a week and celebrate in my home land!
This is a photo from the day Troy proposed.
